TL;DR
- Italian citizens enter Cambodia with a 30 USD tourist e-Visa or a visa on arrival (VOA), no prior consular procedure.
- No bilateral visa exemption between Italy and Cambodia — a visa is mandatory for any stay, even short ones. The Farnesina confirms: “È necessario il visto d’ingresso.”
- No Italy-Cambodia tax treaty: unlike France, Italy has signed no double-taxation agreement with Cambodia — a key point for long-term residents.
Conditions
Standard Cambodian e-Visa conditions:
- Italian passport valid ≥ 6 months after the entry date — explicitly required by the Farnesina (“validità residua di almeno 6 (sei) mesi dalla data d’ingresso”).
- Passport undamaged, with at least 1 blank page for the entry stamp.
- e-Visa printout (PDF) or VOA at airports (Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville) and main land crossings; the Farnesina lists two passport photos for the VOA.
Procedures from Italy
e-Visa (recommended)
At evisa.gov.kh — 30 USD by card, PDF within 3 business days (the Farnesina says “circa tre giorni”). It is a type “T” (tourist) visa, valid 30 days, renewable once for 30 days. EUR payment is converted to USD at the daily rate.
Visa on arrival (VOA)
At international airports and main land border crossings. Have 30 USD cash ready (payment is in US dollars) plus one or two passport photos — cards are not always accepted.
Cambodian embassy accredited to Italy
Cambodia has no resident embassy in Italy. The Royal Embassy of Cambodia in France, in Paris (4 rue Adolphe-Yvon, 75116 Paris), is accredited to the Italian Republic — alongside Andorra, Spain, Malta, Monaco and Portugal. There is also an honorary consul in Milan. The consular route is rarely useful for short tourism; check current fees with the embassy.
Long-stay visa: EB or ER
For stays > 60 consecutive days, switch to:
- EB (Ordinary Business) for working/founding a company; renewed yearly with an MLVT work permit. See EB visa guide.
- ER (Ordinary Retired) for retirees > 55 with pension proof; renewable indefinitely. See ER visa guide.
Tax: no Italy-Cambodia treaty
Unlike France, Italy has no double-taxation agreement with Cambodia. Cambodia’s treaty partners are around a dozen countries (Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, China — including Hong Kong and Macau —, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Turkey…) — Italy is not among them.
For an Italian resident in Cambodia:
- No treaty relief — you manage your cross-border tax exposure yourself, with no treaty tax-credit mechanism.
- Cambodia taxes residency beyond 183 days of presence in the year — see the tax residence guide.
- On the Italian side, your tax-residency status (and any AIRE registration) stays governed by Italian law, regardless of time in Cambodia.
FAQ
Do Italian citizens need a visa for Cambodia?
Yes. The Farnesina states plainly: “È necessario il visto d’ingresso.” A tourist e-Visa (30 USD, 30 days) or VOA suits a short stay.
Must the Italian passport be valid for 6 months?
Yes — at least 6 months after entry, and undamaged, with at least one blank page.
Whom do I contact: Rome, Paris or Bangkok?
For the Cambodian visa and civil records, the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Paris is accredited to Italy (Cambodia has no embassy in Rome). For Italian consular assistance on the ground, the Italian Embassy in Bangkok is competent for Cambodia, with an honorary consul in Phnom Penh.
Is there an Italy-Cambodia tax treaty?
No. No double-taxation agreement is in force between Italy and Cambodia. You manage your tax exposure without treaty relief; Cambodian residency applies beyond 183 days of presence.
Is the Italian driving licence valid in Cambodia?
The Italian licence alone is not recognised. Get an international driving permit in Italy before departure, or convert to a Cambodian licence on arrival.
