TL;DR
- German citizens enter Cambodia with a 30 USD tourist e-Visa (category T) or a visa on arrival (VOA), no prior consular procedure.
- No bilateral visa exemption between Germany and Cambodia — the Auswärtiges Amt confirms German nationals need a visa to enter.
- No Germany-Cambodia tax treaty: no double-taxation agreement has been signed — a key point for long-term residents.
Conditions
Standard Cambodian e-Visa conditions:
- German passport valid ≥ 6 months after the entry date (Auswärtiges Amt: “Reisedokumente müssen zum Zeitpunkt der Einreise noch mindestens sechs Monate gültig sein”).
- Passport undamaged, with 1 blank page for the entry stamp.
- e-Visa printout (PDF) or VOA at airports (Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville) and main land crossings.
Procedures from Germany
e-Visa (recommended)
At evisa.gov.kh — 30 USD by card, PDF within 3 business days. The Auswärtiges Amt advises applying at least two weeks before departure. Categories T (tourism) and E (business) are available as e-Visas. EUR payment is converted to USD at the daily rate.
Visa on arrival (VOA)
At international airports and main land border crossings. Have 30 USD cash ready (payment is in US dollars) plus a passport photo — cards are not always accepted.
Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Berlin
Possible but rarely useful for short tourism. Address: Benjamin-Vogelsdorff-Str. 2, 13187 Berlin-Pankow. For special cases only. On the ground, the German Embassy in Phnom Penh (No. 76-78 Rue Yougoslavie / Street 214) handles consular matters for Germans. Check current fees with the relevant embassy.
Long-stay visa: EB or ER
For stays > 60 consecutive days, switch to:
- EB (Ordinary Business) for working/founding a company; renewed yearly with an MLVT work permit. See EB visa guide.
- ER (Ordinary Retired) for retirees > 55 with pension proof; renewable indefinitely. See ER visa guide.
Note: the Auswärtiges Amt warns that without registration in the FPCS app (Foreign Presence in Cambodia System), a Cambodian visa extension is not possible.
Tax: no Germany-Cambodia treaty
Unlike some countries, Germany has no double-taxation agreement with Cambodia. Cambodia’s treaty partners are around a dozen countries (Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, China — incl. Hong Kong and Macau —, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Turkey…) — Germany is not among them.
For a German resident in Cambodia:
- No treaty relief — you manage your cross-border tax exposure yourself.
- Your German tax residency follows German rules (the Wohnsitz concept under §1 EStG), regardless of time in Cambodia.
- Cambodia taxes residency beyond 183 days of presence — see the tax residence guide.
FAQ
Do German citizens need a visa for Cambodia?
Yes. The Auswärtiges Amt states plainly: “Deutsche Staatsangehörige benötigen für die Einreise nach Kambodscha ein Visum.” A tourist e-Visa (30 USD, 30 days) or VOA suits a short stay.
Must the German passport be valid for 6 months?
Yes — at least 6 months after entry per the Auswärtiges Amt, and undamaged.
Is there a Germany-Cambodia tax treaty?
No. No double-taxation agreement is in force. German residency stays governed by German rules (Wohnsitz, §1 EStG); Cambodian residency applies beyond 183 days of presence.
Is the German driving licence valid in Cambodia?
The German licence alone is not recognised. Get an international driving permit (IDP) in Germany before departure (the Auswärtiges Amt notes only the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP is accepted), or convert to a Cambodian licence on arrival.
