Chapka Assurances

Travel insurance

Chapka Assurances (chapkadirect.fr) is a French travel and expat insurance broker-distributor founded in 2002, part of the Heyme group since 2018. A recognised specialist of the French long-stay travel and Working Holiday Visa (PVT) market, Chapka distributes underlying contracts underwritten by insurers such as MSH International (SwissLife group), AXA Assistance and Allianz, under its own brand and with a fully French-language purchase experience. For French-speaking expats in Cambodia, Chapka is widely used in two specific cases: (1) the first few months on the ground, while waiting to switch to a stable long-stay health insurance (April, Allianz Care, Cigna), through the "Cap Aventure" (3 months–1 year) or "Cap Working Holiday" (PVT) contracts; (2) short business and leisure trips from Cambodia, through the "Cap Adventure" contract. Chapka is not a long-stay health insurer — you should switch after 1 to 2 years maximum to a dedicated expat resident contract. Its strengths are the few-minutes online purchase, fully French documentation, French-speaking customer support, very competitive short-stay rates (from around EUR 50/month depending on age and plan), and direct billing across ASEAN via the MSH/AXA Assistance network. For digital nomads in Cambodia in year 1, Chapka is a mainstream option; beyond that, switching is recommended.

Advantages & drawbacks

Advantages

  • Fully French-speaking — Subscription, terms, customer service — all in French.
  • Very competitive on short stays — ~EUR 50/month on Cap Aventure, one of the cheapest in French.
  • Ideal for the first expat year — Solid cover while waiting for long-stay insurance.
  • PVT-compatible — Cap Working Holiday suited to PVT visa (rarely used in Cambodia but valid).

Drawbacks

  • Not suitable for long stays — Max limit of 1–2 years, then switch to April / Allianz / Cigna.
  • Not a direct insurer — Broker — claims are handled by MSH / AXA Assistance / Allianz.
  • Lower caps than long-term expat health — Medical costs up to EUR 200,000 — comfortable for travel, tight for major long-stay claims.
