AIA (Cambodia) Life Insurance Plc. is the Cambodian subsidiary of AIA Group Limited, the leading pan-Asian life insurer listed in Hong Kong (market capitalisation > USD 80 bn, present in 18 markets). Launched locally in 2013 after acquiring the Bao Viet Cambodia operation, AIA quickly established itself among the leaders of the Cambodian life market with a dense distribution network through in-house trained "Premier Agents" and several bancassurance agreements (Maybank, Hattha Bank). The offer covers term and permanent life insurance, education annuities, retirement plans, USD savings, and a complementary health product ("AIA Healthier Plus") designed as an add-on to a life policy. For expats, AIA is mainly attractive for its regional portability: a policy taken out in Cambodia can be read and managed from any ASEAN subsidiary, which gives peace of mind to expats moving between Phnom Penh, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh, Singapore or Hong Kong. The company is regulated by the Insurance Regulator of Cambodia (IRC) and publishes an annual solvency report compliant with IRC ratios. Claims are handled in branch or through the "AIA Cambodia" app, available in English and Khmer; some documents are available in Mandarin Chinese for the Sino-Khmer clientele.

Advantages & drawbacks

Advantages

  • ASEAN portability — Policy readable and manageable across 18 AIA markets — useful for mobile expats.
  • Strength of the AIA group — AA- rating (S&P) at group level, one of the best in the Asian sector.
  • Long-term plans in USD — Savings and annuities denominated in dollars, protecting against KHR depreciation.
  • Mobile app in English — Policy tracking / claim filing / premium payment via AIA Cambodia.

Drawbacks

  • Not an international health insurer — Complementary and limited health cover — does not replace a true expat health plan (Allianz, Cigna, April).
  • Agent-driven distribution — Sales pressure from an agent can push high-fee savings products.
  • No French version — Documentation and customer support in English / Khmer only.
