tuk-tuk
ទុកទុក
Pronunciation: tuk-tuk
Three-wheeled motorised vehicle, the main mode of urban transport in Cambodia. Two variants coexist:
- Traditional tuk-tuk: motorbike with a trailer hooked to the rear, 4-6 passengers, open on the sides. In decline in Phnom Penh where it is being replaced by Indian models.
- Indian tuk-tuk (“Bajaj”): compact motorised tricycle with an enclosed cabin, 2-3 passengers, the standard for PassApp and Grab.
Indicative rates in Phnom Penh (April 2026):
- Short ride (< 3 km): 3,000-8,000 KHR (≈ 0.75-2 USD).
- Cross-PP ride: 10,000-20,000 KHR (≈ 2.50-5 USD).
- Hourly (hire): 5-10 USD.
Recommended apps: PassApp (local leader, KHQR integrated), Grab (regional), TADA (alternative). The fare is calculated automatically, which avoids blind negotiation. To hail a tuk-tuk on the street, negotiate before boarding — being quoted 1 or 2 USD above the real price is common for foreigners.
