Riel

រៀល

Pronunciation: ri-el

Cambodia’s national currency (KHR). In practice, Cambodia operates as a dual-currency economy: the US dollar (USD) circulates freely for most transactions, and the riel is used for small amounts (< 1 USD ≈ 4,100 KHR) and for change.

Cambodian administrations post their fees in riels in official texts (ministerial orders) but accept them in USD at the day’s rate. Fees are rounded to the nearest whole USD in practice.
