Dara Insurance

Vehicle insurance · Phnom Penh

Dara Insurance Plc. is a Cambodian general insurer founded in 2017, regulated by the Insurance Regulator of Cambodia (IRC) and majority-owned by Cambodian shareholders (with a stake held by the Royal Group conglomerate). The company covers the full non-life market in Cambodia: vehicle (motor, motorbike, fleet), home, travel, group health, personal accident, marine, freight, construction and engineering, as well as a business line for SMEs and large accounts. Dara is one of the most active insurers in vehicle cover for the local and middle-class expat clientele, with a network of agents and bank partnerships (notably with Sathapana Bank and Phillip Bank). For expats in Cambodia, Dara is regularly used for vehicle insurance (motor and motorbike) thanks to competitive rates and a claims process considered relatively quick (10–18 days on average). As with all local insurers, documentation and customer service are in English and Khmer; no French support. Dara is approved by the GDLT to issue the vehicle insurance certificate required at registration. For health and long-term expatriation, Dara remains a complementary option, to be combined with an international health insurer (April, Allianz Care, Cigna). No active AM Best rating for Dara.

Advantages & drawbacks

Advantages

  • Competitive motor / motorbike rates — Often cheaper than Forte / Infinity on mid-range vehicles.
  • Claims paid in 10–18 days — Relatively quick vehicle settlement times per user feedback.
  • Sathapana / Phillip bancassurance — Accessible subscription for customers of these banks.
  • Multi-line — Motor, motorbike, home, group health, business — possible one-stop shop.

Drawbacks

  • No independent rating — No AM Best / S&P rating, to be balanced by reading the IRC report.
  • No French version — Documents and customer service in English / Khmer.
  • Limited health caps — Suited to local care, not international expat health cover.
  • Young company — Founded in 2017 — still a short claims track record.
