Kratié Province
Living in Kratié — Mekong & dolphins
Kratié is the capital of Kratié province on the banks of the Mekong, roughly 350 km from Phnom Penh (~6–7h by road). The town is internationally known for the population of Irrawaddy dolphins (critically endangered species) observable at Kampi Pool, 15 km north. With its preserved French colonial architecture and Koh Trong island accessible by ferry and bicycle, it is one of Cambodia's most authentic towns.

Overview
Kratié revolves around its Mekong waterfront, a lively central market and a relatively well-preserved French colonial streetscape. It is a stopover town for tourists travelling between Phnom Penh and the north-east (Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri), but some expats — mainly tied to NGOs — have made it their base.
Koh Trong is a Mekong island opposite the town, reachable by ferry in 5 minutes. It is explored by bicycle (~10 km circuit) through coconut plantations and fishing villages.

Districts
- Mekong waterfront (Riverside): riverfront promenade, cafés, guesthouses, calm atmosphere. The preferred area for resident expats.
- Town centre (central market): access to shops, local market, Khmer restaurants.
- Koh Trong: Mekong island 5 min by ferry, possible for long stays, rural atmosphere.
Safety
Kratié is a very safe town. Crime is almost non-existent. The main risks are:
- Road accidents: National Road 7 between Phnom Penh and Kratié can be dangerous at night (unpredictable local driving).
- Mekong currents: swimming in the river is strongly discouraged — currents are powerful and unpredictable.

Employment
The local job market is very narrow. Expats present in Kratié work mainly in:
- NGOs and conservation: WWF Cambodia, Mekong Watch programmes, rural development.
- Teaching: English language centres, volunteer work in local schools.
- Ecotourism: managing guesthouses or dolphin-watching activities.
An MLVT work permit remains mandatory for any salaried activity, filed in Phnom Penh.

Expat community & networks
The expat community is very small — mainly NGO workers on short rotations. There is no permanently active Facebook group dedicated to Kratié expats. The network forms informally around guesthouses and cafés on the Mekong waterfront.
Housing
The rental supply is limited but very affordable: simple furnished houses USD 100–250/month, Mekong-view bungalows USD 150–350/month. Leases are often monthly, negotiated directly with the landlord. Few agencies — go through expat Facebook groups in Phnom Penh or local NGO recommendations.

Schools
International school options are non-existent in Kratié. Expatriate families with school-age children do not generally settle in Kratié. Options:
- CNED (distance learning) — possible with parental supervision.
- Phnom Penh (Lycée René-Descartes, ~6h by road) for an AEFE-accredited French curriculum.
Coworking & remote work
Kratié has no formal coworking space. Internet is provided by 4G (Smart, Cellcard) — sufficient for basic tasks but unstable in bad weather. Fibre remains rare in residential housing.
- A few riverside cafés with Wi-Fi are suitable for working during quiet hours.
- Have a backup solution (second 4G SIM, satellite connection if needed).
Irrawaddy dolphins
Kampi Pool, 15 km north of Kratié, is the main observation site for Irrawaddy dolphins in the Cambodian Mekong. WWF estimates the population at fewer than 90 individuals — one of the most endangered freshwater populations in the world.
Healthcare
Kratié provincial hospital covers basic care. For serious treatment, Phnom Penh remains the reference (~6–7h by road). A basic private clinic exists in town.
