- Very limited supply and more expensive than the mainland: everything is imported by ferry, prices are 30–50% higher than in Sihanoukville.
- No bank or ATM on the island: bring a generous supply of USD cash before boarding.
- Informal and seasonal leases: most accommodation is rented by the month with no formal contract.
Accommodation areas
Koh Touch (Village 1)
The only developed village on the island, on the western side. Wooden or concrete bungalows, bars, restaurants. The most accessible area but also the most lively — less suited to peaceful long-term stays.
- Bungalows: 250–450 USD/month
Long Beach (Kok Kong)
A 7 km beach with little development. A few isolated bungalows, complete tranquillity. Accessible on foot or by boat from Koh Touch (20 min).
- Isolated bungalows: 200–400 USD/month (very limited)
Koh Rong Sanloem (adjacent island)
Technically a separate island. Saracen Bay (calm resort side) and Sunset Beach (wilder side) are popular for longer stays.
Costs and utilities
| Item | Typical amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rent (furnished bungalow) | 250–500 USD/month | 30–50% higher than the mainland |
| Electricity (generator) | Often included | Power cuts possible |
| Water (tank) | 10–20 USD/month | Rainwater or delivered by ferry |
| Internet (satellite) | 30–60 USD/month | StarLink with some operators |
2025 estimates — costs are higher than the mainland because everything is imported by ferry.
How to find accommodation
- Via lodges and resorts: negotiate a monthly rate directly with the properties.
- Word of mouth: in the bars and restaurants of Koh Touch, ask permanent residents.
- Facebook groups: search in “Koh Rong Community” or “Sihanoukville Expats & Locals” groups.
FAQ
Can you live on Koh Rong year-round?
A few dozen people do — mainly managers of tourist establishments. Life is radically different from the mainland: no car, ferry resupply, satellite internet, virtually no medical care. A unique but demanding experience.
Is accommodation available year-round?
Yes, but supply shrinks significantly in high season (November–March) when resorts fill up. The low season (May–October) is the best time to negotiate a long-term lease.
