  • Yeak Laom lake: a protected volcanic crater of exceptional beauty — one of the most remarkable natural sites in Southeast Asia.
  • Ratanakiri primary forest: hiking in one of Cambodia’s last great intact forests — wildlife, flora and indigenous peoples.
  • Waterfalls (Cha Ong, Ka Tieng): waterfalls reachable by motorbike from Banlung — spectacular in the rainy season.

Yeak Laom lake

Yeak Laom lake is a perfectly circular volcanic crater lake (720 m in diameter, 48 m deep). It is classified as a protected area and managed by the local Tampeoun communities with support from the Ministry of Environment.

  • Swimming: permitted in certain areas — exceptionally clear water.
  • Hiking: trail around the lake (~2h on foot through the forest).
  • Wildlife spotting: birds (kingfishers, herons), forest lizards.
  • Entry: access fee applies (check the rate on site — managed by the local community).

Waterfalls

Cha Ong

About 6 km from Banlung. Accessible by motorbike, small falls in a forested setting. Beautiful in the rainy season when the flow is strong.

Ka Tieng

9 km from Banlung. Larger falls with a natural pool accessible for swimming.

Indigenous villages

Ratanakiri province is home to several indigenous communities: Bunong, Kreung, Jarai, Kachok. Some villages welcome visitors with community guides.

  • Visits to be arranged through local lodges or development NGOs.
  • Respect traditions and visit protocols (ask for permission, do not photograph without consent).
  • Buy local crafts directly from the artisans.

Gems and Ratanakiri mines

The province is known for its precious stones (zircons, rubies, tourmalines) extracted from the local laterite. Informal gem markets exist in Banlung. Best avoided without serious gemmological knowledge — high risk of fraud for the uninitiated.

FAQ

Is Ratanakiri’s primary forest accessible without a guide?

Partially — the trails around Yeak Laom and the main waterfalls do not require a guide. For deep forest treks, a local guide is strongly recommended for safety and to avoid getting lost on unmarked tracks.

What is the best season to visit Ratanakiri?

  • Dry season (November–April): passable roads, motorbike-accessible tracks, comfortable hiking.
  • Rainy season (May–October): lush forest, waterfalls at their peak, but forest tracks are difficult or impassable. Better suited to resident expats familiar with the terrain.

Are there quality lodges around Yeak Laom lake?

Yes — several eco-lodges of varying quality exist around the lake. For resident expats, most rent in town and visit the lake regularly rather than staying there.
